5 Places To Find Tulips In Amsterdam
Flowers and Amsterdam, they just go hand and hand and one of the things that the Dutch are famous for besides drugs and prostitution, are their beautiful tulips of course.
The Netherlands is one of the biggest exporters of tulips in the world and they love to show off with their magnificent varieties.
1- Dam Square
Each year the flower season opens in January, when Amsterdam invites people to pick their free tulips from the Dam Square. About 10.000 people show up each year to pick their free flowers.
2- Vondelpark
In the Vondelpark, on of the biggest parcs in Amsterdam, the city plants a lot of beautiful flowers that each year around april start blooming. Last year a special “tulip island” was created. Here the tulips will be stand all year long, so even in wintertime it’s a nice place to go to.
3- Amsterdam Tulip Museum
Amsterdam Tulip Museum is (like the name gives away) a special museum for the tulip. The location is in the heart of Amsterdam, Prinsengracht 116, and is worth a visit. It’s a great place to visit when you are stoned and want to see something different then all the shops and galleries in the town. Only downside is that is will cost you € 5,- to get in.
4- Bloemenmarkt
The Bloemenmarkt (flower market) is the only floating market in the world and can be found in the center of Amsterdam. This market is a great place to visit if you want to buy some bulbs to bring to your family at home. The market stands are standing on houseboats and is are open all year long from Mondays through Saturdays from 9.00-17:30 and on Sundays from 11.00-17.30.
5- Keukenhof
The Keukenhof gardens are a 32 hectares area filled with flower gardens, making it the largest flower garden on earth. From around 20th of March this place will burst into an amazing kaleidoscope of colors and smells.
This place is not in Amsterdam, but you can easily get there by bus. A good way is to get an Arriva Combi-ticket. This includes the entrance to the park and the ticket for the bus. You can purchase this ticket at the tourist information center right in front of Central Station or at Schiphol. Its also smarter to buy this ticket that includes the entrance to the parc, as you avoid the long waiting lines at the park.
