Amsterdam Hostels
Hostels in Amsterdam
Amsterdam has of course your usual hotels with and without stars for “cheap” prices as well as the more expensive ones. But if you are interested in something else, or just don’t have that much budget, then Amsterdam also offers quite a few cheaper options, such as youth hostels and campsites.
Youth hostels in Amsterdam are the way to go if you want to be in the city center. It might not be a good idea when you want to spend a nice and quiet weekend with your girlfriend as they often are pretty crowded and loud. In this case it would be smarter to look for a bit cheap 1 star hotel, but make sure to book this far ahead as they are very hard to find. But when you don’t mind sharing a room or a bathroom with your friends or even with strangers, then youth hostels are the way to go.
Most youth hostels in Amsterdam basically function as dorms. You share bathrooms, mostly one for each floor, there might be a common eating room and a common kitchen if you are lucky. Most hostels have internet access nowadays and otherwise there might be some boardgames for if you really get bored ;). Lockers are a common thing in most hostels and a good tip is to bring a towel and even a sleeping bag or a blanket, as some hostels charge extra for sheets and towels.
A nice thing about youth hostels in Amsterdam is that you will meet other travelers from all parts of the planet. I Amsterdam this can result in having nice times with total strangers while all of you being super stoned, sharing stories about coffeeshops and Amsterdam :D. And of course, imagine being without a lighter in the middle of the night while wanting to light up the last spliff before going to sleep; there will always be a fellow traveler around to help you out!
Amsterdam is always crowded, so we do really advice you to book a hostel as early as possible because sleeping under the bridge or in a park in Amsterdam is really not what you want to do with your time there… First of all it is not even allowed of course, but it might even be a bit dangerous!
On this page we will share some hostel information with you. Make sure to check if they are allowing booking by phone or email, or is they only allow booking online via sites like Hostel World or Hostel Bookers.
The following listing is in random order:

Lucky Lake
Lucky Lake is a special place for people that not necessarily want to stay in the center of Amsterdam. It lays next to a lake on the south side of Amsterdam (near Vinkeveen, basically the countryside of Amsterdam and it’s a really nice idyllic place) and offers accommodation in caravans! It is a super cousy place where mostly young people are renting rooms and there is even space to put a tent. It takes only about 30 minutes to go to the city center of Amsterdam and Lucky Lake provides a shuttle service every hour for the ridiculous price of just 1 euro! Imagine yourself waking up in a caravan, having breakfast in your hammock, feeding the ducks before going for a swim in the lake and then taking the shuttle to go for a walk in the center of Amsterdam! The lake is beautiful and you can rent a small boat to go around even. Don’t worry that it would be too much of away from the habituated lands as it even has Wifi.

Shelter Jordaan
Shelter Jordaan is one of the two Shelter hostels in Amsterdam. This one is located in the Jordaan, probably the nicest neighborhood in the center of Amsterdam. There are many shops, bars, restaurants and of course coffee shops around on walking distance. And the streets and canals in the Jordaan neighborhood are super small and cute. The nicest thing about the Jordaan is that it is a real local neighborhood with traditional Dutch bars with their famous Dutch music playing on the comfortable terraces. The Anne Frank house is basically at the end of the street where the hostel is located and also Leischeplein is just a 15 minute walk. Shelter Jordaan is a non-smoking hostel and hosts people from all ages, but mostly a younger crowd. It is a very friendly place where they cook a home-made dinner each evening for the staff and you are very welcome to join them for just 5 euros!

Shelter City
Shelter City is right in the middle of the oldest part of Amsterdam with its vivid nightlife. Olny a 10 minute walk from Centeral Station and more coffeeshops around then is good for you ;D. There are bigger rooms for groups or random guests that share bathrooms on the same floor, but there are also rooms for only 4 people and these rooms have their own bathrooms. Each bed has its own locker but in general its a very friendly and peacefull place where you will meet some interesting individuals for sure.

Bulldog Hostel Amsterdam
The Bulldog Hostel Amsterdam is part of the Bulldog chain. Bulldog Coffeeshop was once one of the first coffee shops in the Netherlands and nowadays they have a whole chain of coffeeshops, gift shops, their own cannabis seed company, hotels and even some businesses in the United States! This hostel calls itself a 5 star hostel and the prices are a bit higher than most hostels, but hey, you get a coffee shop right down the stairs for that, so if you really want luxury and plan to get lazy, this is the place to go.
